RIP JOHN HUGHES
You made my teen years so much more interesting and fun. It was a pleasure quoting all of your movies, practically every day since 1983. You will be missed.

Bruce has another awesome show for you...and I ramble about Hollywood
Hey guys, So Bruce McDonald has a new show today...it's an homage to the Bo Diddley beat featuring songs from Bo, Buddy Holly, The Stooges, Bowie, Elvis, Nick Lowe and more. tune in at noon pacific!!! I'm sure there will be an encore presentation later on as well. This show is too good NOT to repeat!!! tune in to The HOUND now if ya like.
Now, on to the Hollywood musings....
It was just released this week that Spielberg is going to remake the classic Jimmy Stewart film HARVEY. It got me thinking about Hollywood, and remakes...and the continued flood of regurgitation that keeps the Hollywood machine spinning. Now, Harvey, I get. Very few people under the age of 40 have ever even heard of the film. So it makes sense that a flick like that would be ripe for a remake. Then I read that Hollywood is remaking RED DAWN. WTF???
Now, maybe I'm showing my age here...but Red Dawn??? The classic cheese 80's flick starring the fantastic Patrick Swayze, C.Thomas Howell and Charlie Sheen? Not to mention stellar over-acting from Jennifer Grey and Lea Thompson! The Powers Boothe cameo alone is worth it's weight in gold!
Of course, as my friend @Heitzie pointed out to me on FB, they will no doubt change the enemies from Soviets to MidEast terrorists. That part's a no brainer. But how can you improve on the campy badness of this movie? Are you going to make it a serious film??? Reading that the hot girl "Tara" from The Friday Night Lights tv show has already been cast leads me to believe they're not going to shoot THAT high...but one never knows how these things will play out.
Let's just hope it's not Kurt Russell in the Harry Dean Stanton role of Patrick and Charlie's character's father in the concentration camp scene. ("Boys!!! Avenge Me!!! Avenge Me!!!!) That powerful scene still gets me.
Okay, maybe Kurt wouldn't be so bad. But if they cast Ashlee Simpson or Demi Lovato in this movie I am NOT GOING. I mean it! Unless I get free passes to the screening.

Tuesday night musings...
Watching American Psycho. In my opinion, Bale's FINEST role. If only he had played Batman like "Patrick Bateman"....would have been a far more interesting move. Patrick Bateman would NOT have had a movie stolen from him by the likes of Ledger's The Joker, that's for sure. I think Huey Lewis would have done wonders for the soundtrack. Ah well. Let's move on.
I've got some great music coming up on the shows this week. (http://www.HoundstoothRadio.com)
I am lucky enough to be debuting brand new music from one of my all time favorite SoCal punk bands Big Drill Car. They reunited last year for some shows after many many years off...I was lucky enough to see one of the first shows back in Huntington Beach. The reunion was so successful they ended up playing some of the Warped Tour dates and decided that maybe a rareties & unreleased cd was worth thinking about. After getting together to see if they might want to write a new tune for the compilation, they ended up with FIVE!!! Signed, sealed, and soon to be delivered to an on-line venue near YOU!
The CD will be called "A Never Ending Endeavor" and will be sold thru various online outlets including at their lives shows playing with All! on their mini House of Blues tour thru So Cal this July.
The single is called "Eye A Door" and I will be playing it this Friday on my show.
Also on the bill this week? New music from The Reigning Monarchs. Excellent surf/ska fare with a song title that kept me in stiches, "Short Pants for Fatty". I mean, come ON...what's not to love?
So just a little sneaky peek of what's coming up in the next few days.(1pm Pacific/4pm Eastern)
As always, thanks for taking the time to read my blog, listen to my show, and support Houndstooth Radio. It's greatly appreciated.

Happy Father's Day! and some updates...
Hey all, sorry I've been so silent on the Blog front. Moving has pretty much taken the wind out of my sails. Came down with a nasty head cold just as we finished moving all of our belongings to the lovely Studio City. Should be right as rain in a day or two. Awesome things cooking over at Houndstooth Radio...including some new music from one of my most beloved bands Big Drill Car! They are doing a House of Blues mini-tour in July with All! and rehearsals went so well that new music was written, recorded, mixed...and is ready for the world! I have heard the first single "Eye A Door" and it is STELLAR!! More info on the song and their upcoming cd release on Houndstooth VERY VERY soon!!!
Happy Father's Day to all the cool dads out there! Including my dad Mike and my husband Trevor...the two best dads I know!!

The Heartless Bastards @ Spaceland 4/21/09
I have been looking forward to this show for so long, that when it finally came, I sort of lost my mind. I tried to *live blog* from the audience, but honestly, I was rocking too hard to say anything clever or witty. Spaceland was packed. It was hot, it was sweaty, and there was an energy in the air. The band were playing so well together, taking the audience on this amazing ride. At one point I looked over into the middle of the audience and a bunch of people had raised their hands up like they were at a religious revival. All I could think of was; "HELL YEAH".
Kat and I had placed ourselves just a person or two back from where singer Erika stood on stage. Sweat was just pouring off of me like sheets of rain, but I could not have cared less. That woman just belted out songs like she was on fire. Just phenomenal. After about 6 or 7 songs in, I was ready to pass out, so I moved out of the crowd and to the back. (I know, I'm a pussy)
At the end of the night we were lucky enough to meet Erika Wennerstrom, and she was amazingly gracious, sweet, and maybe a tad tipsy.... I think I said something ridiculous like "It's such an honor to meet you" because I get like that around musicians that inspire me. Go ahead, make all the fun you like. I also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mark Nathan, who plays guitar for THB. His wife and I have been following each other on Twitter recently, so I thought I'd go up and introduce myself. He was equally as gracious and just an all around sweet guy. These folks are not the jaded hipsters one usually suspects when a band is that good. That kind of stuff goes a long way with me.
Please catch THB live if you can...they are wrapping up a tour with Gaslight Anthem, and then will be hitting the road for a bit with Jenny Lewis and the Decemberists. They will also be playing lots of festivals this summer including Lollapalooza in Chicago. Do yourself a favor, experience this band in person. I had a religious experience. Heartless Bastards be thy name.

Killing a few minutes before I head over to The Hound HQ to get some work done. Lots of exciting things going on at Houndstooth. We've officially mind-melded w/fellow dj and music savant Bruce McDonald. I'll do a full *C-Spotlight* shine on him soon...but for now just know his music collection is almost as big as his musical knowledge. We're talking huge. colossal even. So tons of new and old music going into the Hound's library.
New music from Rancid, Art Brut, and The Dead Weather added this week. Looking forward to some new music soon from Frank Black's latest band *Grand Duchy*. Mr. Black, aka: Mr. Black Francis/Mr. Charles Thompson has begun a band with the amazing vocal stylings of Violet Clark, (who incidentally happens to be his wife). I've heard four tracks on their myspace page and I must say, I am smitten thus far.
Elsewhere in my universe; sad to see the season and most likely series finale of Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. I really loved this show. I knew it was on FOX....I knew it's future was bleak, and yet...I loved it still. Shirley Manson as a *metal* was poetry in motion. Brian Austin Green was all ruggedly handsome as John Connor's uncle.... I shall miss ye, T:SCC.
I hear Dollhouse is next on FOX's chopping block, and I can't say I'm surprised, but really, can we just have a Joss Whedon network already? I'd pay a subscription to that!
Looking forward to seeing The Heartless Bastards at Spaceland in Silverlake next week. (April 21st) I will give a full report next week for sure.
That's all for now....

The C Spotlight shines on Roll The Tanks!
One of my fave bands we play on Houndstooth has a new Tour Diary out. Take a look at how they spent their recent tour en route to SXSW in Austin, Texas. Looks like they found a rockin' laundry mat and a restaurant named after ME! (okay, not really named after me....)
Originally from Mill City (aka: Lowell, MA) they now call LA home. Get to know the amazing Roll The Tanks !!! (You'll be awfully glad you did.)

I have a confession to make. I'm in love. Last week, on the recommendation of The Duke Spirit, I checked out a new band's myspace page. "Well, if the Duke Spirit like them...I can certainly take time out of my busy schedule to listen" I thought to myself. "What harm could it do?"
The first time you hear The Heartless Bastards frontwoman Erika sing, her voice invokes Patti Smith wrapped in a blanket of Lucinda Williams with a little Chrissie Hynde & Serge Gainsbourg sprinkled on top.
Sonically, THB ride the balance of twang and rock with a precision I have never before experienced. The lyrics are simple and stunning. "I could be so happy, if I just quit being sad". (Why didn't I think of that before???!!!)
We happily added their song *The Mountain* this week on Houndstooth Radio. I hope you like it half as much as I do.
Follow them on Twitter: @TheHbastards. Tell them I said "Hi". I'll try not to ride by their houses on my bike....try not to write bad poetry about them....try not to get their name tattooed on my ass...but it's going to be tough. I am in love with The Heartless Bastards. How do I tell my husband?

Playlist Spotlight: Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
Shining the *C* Spotlight on one of our favorite songs in rotation on Houndstooth this month:
Come On Over [Turn Me On] by Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan from the album Sunday At Devil Dirt. Isobel is formerly of the band Belle & Sebastian and Mark Lanegan formerly of Screaming Trees and the occasional frontman of Queens of the Stone Age.
In April 2004, Campell released an EP with Lanegan, titled Time Is Just the Same. They would later release a single entitled "Ramblin' Man" for their collaboration album Ballad of the Broken Seas. Isobel wrote and recorded the majority of the album's tracks in Glasgow, while Lanegan added vocals in Los Angeles. The album was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Prize. The duo played four UK concerts in January 2007, with the London date being moved to a larger venue as a result of high demand for tickets.
In 2007, the duo recorded a second album together, entitled Sunday at Devil Dirt, which was released on May 5th, 2008.
The partnership began as Isobel was working on Time Is Just The Same, an EP she released shortly after Amorino, in 2004. The title track featured Eugene Kelly, formerly of The Vaselines and Captain America/Eugenius, on guest vocals, but Kelly's voice was too high to sing his lines on Why Does My Head Hurt So, one of the EPs other songs. Isobels boyfriend at the time played her one of Lanegans justly-lauded solo album, and Campbell knew shed found the voice for the song.

And the rest, as they say, is history. We hope you enjoy the song as much as we do here at Houndstoothradio. Cheers!
